Translating the New ISIR
An applicant or parent can update Family Size on the FAFSA if information changes after a tax return is filed.
By Rick Cox and Siobahn Arbogast
- Family Size has replaced Household Size. Family Size is returned with Federal Tax Information (FTI) data based on the taxpayer and dependents on the tax return. The applicant or parent is given the opportunity to update this information if it has changed since the tax return was filed.
- In some instances, Family Size is assumed if reporting doesn’t make logical sense (i.e., in a case where a student is married but Family Size is reported as one, Family Size would be assumed to be two).
- The hierarchy to be used for the SAI calculation is Updated Family Size, Assumed Family Size and lastly, FTI.
- You are no longer able to include unborn children in the Family Size.
