COVID-19: What Now, What's Next

By Rick Cox

The January 15, 2021, electronic announcement from the U.S. Department of Education includes a chart of COVID waivers. This is a great resource.

Many of these waivers are still in effect.

Some of the waivers will sunset at the end of the payment period in which the emergency ends, whereas others may end at the end of the next payment period or award year after the end of the emergency. The chart referenced above will include the sunset dates for the waivers.

If a student fails to comply with a vaccination requirement that results in the institution withdrawing the student, the student would not be eligible for the Return to Title IV related COVID waiver.

The R2T4 deadline for reporting withdrawals with a COVID waiver was September 30, 2022, for both 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 award years. For the R2T4 COVID waiver, report the amount that you would have used in the R2T4 (net loan amounts).
